Made-to-Measure Furniture for a Characterful Buckinghamshire Cottage

This bespoke furniture project in Brill, Buckinghamshire, was designed to make practical use of the space surrounding an existing fireplace while working sympathetically with the character of the property.

Alan created a combination of painted cabinetry, shelving and a generous oak work surface, transforming the room into a practical home office without detracting from its original features.

Designed Around the Existing Architecture

Period properties rarely offer perfectly straight walls, square corners or standard dimensions, and that is part of their character.

Rather than trying to make the room conform to standard furniture, Alan designed each element around the existing structure, including the fireplace, window, alcoves and exposed ceiling beams.

The result is furniture that feels as though it belongs within the room rather than having simply been added to it.

Bespoke Oak Desk

A substantial oak worktop forms the main desk area, extending around the corner to create a generous workspace.

The rounded outer corner softens the shape of the desk and allows it to sit comfortably within the relatively compact room.

A discreet cable opening was also incorporated into the worktop, helping to keep computer and electrical cables organised.

Painted Shaker Cabinetry

Made-to-measure cupboards were fitted into the alcoves on either side of the fireplace, providing useful concealed storage without taking attention away from the room's original features.

Simple Shaker-style doors and understated hardware give the cabinetry a timeless appearance, while the painted finish contrasts naturally with the warmth of the oak.

Floating shelves above provide additional open storage and display space.

Traditional Character, Practical Design

One of the strengths of bespoke furniture is the ability to work around the quirks of an older property rather than compromising around them.

For this project, every component was designed specifically for its position within the room, creating a practical workspace while retaining the cottage's fireplace, beams and original proportions.

The combination of natural oak and painted cabinetry also provides a simple, timeless finish designed to sit comfortably within the property for years to come.
